EcoSquiggle Sheets

Bio-Plastic & Circular Design

EcoSquiggle sheets are a playful, eco-friendly alternative to paper designed for kindergartens. Made from translucent, gelatine-based bioplastic, the sheets can be drawn on, wiped clean, and reused, making art more sustainable and reducing waste. Their unique translucency encourages children to collaborate by drawing on both sides, working together to create shared masterpieces while learning about teamwork and environmental responsibility. Once the sheets reach the end of their life, they can be melted down, recast, or composted, introducing young learners to the ideas of circular design and the natural cycle of materials.

Instead of children using paper for art and simply placing it in the recycling bin where they only witness one stage of the product’s lifecycle, EcoSquiggle sheets give children the chance to experience and engage with multiple stages, from creating and reusing to melting down, remaking, or composting. This hands-on process helps them understand circular design and encourages a deeper connection to sustainability and the life cycle of materials.

Through this project explored bio-based materials, experimenting with gelatine bioplastics to design a durable, translucent alternative to paper that supports reuse, collaboration, and compostability in the classroom. The process combined research, creative problem-solving, prototyping, and circular design thinking always focusing on how to turn environmental education into an interactive, playful experience.

EcoSquiggle sheets were inspired by projects by public artist Rowena Martinich (Melbourne, Australia) that explores light, shaddow and tranlucent pieces while ensuring her pieces are for everyone to experience.  As well as drawing inspiration from the common art practice of children painting on plastic sheets where the smooth surface encourages free expression and experimentation. EcoSquiggle sheets offer a sustainable alternative that allows for the same creative freedom while teaching children about reuse, collaboration, and the circular life of materials.
